Wasn’t sure if this would work, but it’s Great!

My wife and I have been considering getting a small cultivator for our flower beds. It was obvious that a full size tiller was “overkill,” and even smaller gas powered cultivators looked like they would be hard to handle. When I saw the Ego cultivator, I showed it to my wife, and we both wondered whether it would be powerful enough while being more manageable than the gas powered alternatives. I’ve used Ego tools for over 6 years (string trimmer and hedge trimmer), and they worked great. So, we decided to get the Ego cultivator as part of the new Multi-Head system (along with an Ego edger tool). GREAT decision! The cultivator tool works very well in all but our smallest areas (the blades require at least 18” of “side to side” clearance and a foot or so of “back and forth” clearance, but it works fine for much longer and wider areas. We used it first in one of our larger beds (about 25 ft x 4 ft), with a dozen medium flowering shrubs. It Interestingly, it actually seems to work best when it is being pulled “backwards” (toward the user). We rake off old mulch, etc and use the cultivator to cut off and dig up at least a couple of inches — which allows us to quickly sort through and remove weeds, grasses, etc. This is effectively impossible when the ground is hard and unbroken. The cultivator quickly gives us the ability to weed the beds and then recover them — usually with new mulch. The results look great and feel well worth the effort. We use a 4 Ahr battery, which is a little heavy, but you do need some weight to help keep the blades working in the hard packed dirt. A shoulder strap is needed to help keep the weight on your shoulders instead of your arms. I’ve actually ordered an after-market handle to attach lower on the shaft which SHOULD allow me to stand straighter, reduce back strain, and give me a way to apply a bit more downward force onto the blades as they work. We’ll see how well that turns out, but either way, I’m very pleased with the Ego Cultivator tool.
